Sacramento – Assemblymember Chris Holden (D-Pasadena) had ten bills approved by the Assembly this week as the deadline for getting bills out of their house of origin approached. The bills include measures to help the long-term unemployed, increase penalties for vandalism in our parklands and collect information on California’s truancy crisis.
AB 1451 Concurrent Enrollment: expands opportunities for high school students to take college courses or vocational classes in community colleges by offering career technical education, career pathways, dropout prevention.
AB 1543 WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification) adds the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-BIZ) to the list of entities that employers must notify when closing a plant.
AB 1557 Veterans – Education: gives veterans a stronger voice in college leadership by adding veterans to the California Community College Board of Governors.
AB 1566 Kitchen Grease Theft: gives law enforcement stronger tools to combat the growing problem of kitchen grease theft. Since kitchen grease became an essential part of biofuel, it has become a target for grease thieves.
AB 1586 Workplace Development: requires contractors doing business with the state to give hiring priority to longtime unemployed workers.
AB 1672 Education- Truancy: will help districts and counties collect better information on students missing school and then determine how to keep students in the classroom and out of the courtroom.
AB 1767 Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy: increases penalties on vandalism and littering along the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy. Penalties will be used to fund cleanup efforts.
AB 1912 Education – President Obama: encourages the State Board of Education to provide academic curriculum on the election of President Obama and its historic impact.
AB 1921 Transparency in Private Contracts: requires state contractors to provide state agencies access to all records related to the performance of that state contract.
AB 1147 Massage Businesses – Joint Author: gives local governments more control over regulating massage businesses in their cities in an effort to crackdown on fronts for prostitution.
AJR 33 calls on Department of Defense to “set the record straight” by adding the names of 74 sailors to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington
