Educational Forum on Vaccinations

As the number of measles cases rises throughout California and the nation, the vaccine conflict has heated up. I am inviting you to join me for an Educational Forum on Vaccinations. How well-vaccinated is your child's daycare, pre-school or school? Who should get the vaccine? What about lingering safety concerns regarding the vaccine? Public health professionals will be present to outline the reasons for vaccinations from a public health standpoint.

Measles are highly contagious. Vaccinations are effective in preventing the spread of measles. If you are not immunized, professionals from the California Department of Public Health recommend immediate immunization.

Bears in Your Backyard

It seems you can't turn on the TV lately without seeing a bear ambling through foothill neighborhoods looking for something to eat. As drought conditions continue to make food scarce in the mountains, black bears weighing up to 500 pounds have been finding it hard to resist a free meal in fruit trees, garbage cans and pet bowls. A bear's food intake jumps from 3,000 to 25,000 calories a day this time of year. That's the human equivalent of 83 cheeseburgers!

Working with the Monrovia Police Department, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and Athens Services, I have organized a public safety forum to discuss safety measures when living near wildlife. Representatives will be on hand to discuss what to do when you find a bear in your backyard and how to bear-proof your property.
