(SACRAMENTO, CA) - Today, California State Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas (D-Salinas) appointed Assemblymember John Harabedian (D-Pasadena) as the Chair of the Joint Legislative Audit Committee.
“I’m honored and humbled that Speaker Rivas has appointed me the Chair of the Joint Legislative Audit Committee,” said Assemblymember Harabedian. “Californians expect transparency and results from our state government. I’m proud to take on this role to help deliver on those expectations and build greater trust in our government to effectively and efficiently meet the needs of our communities.”
The Joint Legislative Audit Committee (JLAC) is established under the California Constitution and Joint Rules of the Legislature, tasked with overseeing government operations and finances. The 14-member committee, composed of seven Assembly Members and seven Senators, reviews audit requests from legislators, conducts oversight hearings, and directs audits through the California State Auditor’s Office.
“We must ensure existing state programs are working full-speed ahead, and I’m confident Assemblymember Harabedian will be a wise and strong steward for essential oversight efforts. I look forward to working with John as we look in the rearview mirror and chart a path forward to renew opportunity and innovation in our state,” said Assembly Speaker Rivas.
JLAC prioritizes audit requests, including performance and financial audits, to assess the efficiency, effectiveness, and compliance of state agencies and programs. The chairmanship becomes effective in the new year, following a vote by committee membership.
