Assemblymember Chris Holden’s Statement on Governor Jerry Brown’s State of the State Address
Sacramento, CA – Today, Governor Jerry Brown delivered the 2017 State of the State Address. Assemblymember Chris Holden (AD – 41) issued the following statement:
“I applaud Governor Jerry Brown for his passionate leadership and commitment to protecting the gains California has made on our progressive values, and lending a voice to the millions of Californians that may be adversely affected by new federal policies. He understands Californian’s unique role as a beacon of hope and change, not just for our country but the world.
I am resolute, now more than ever, to build upon our successes in California – growing our economy, protecting our environment, strengthening our infrastructure and supporting working families.
Notwithstanding his inspiring and important speech, I believe we must also focus on the nuts and bolts of our budget, including our commitment to passing a comprehensive infrastructure bill, directing resources to affordable housing, and developing a mechanism that allows cities and counties greater autonomy to meet these goals.
Additionally, Governor Brown’s recently proposed budget includes cuts to the Middle Class Scholarship, and a fee increase for our public higher education institutions. The Middle Class Scholarship awarded 1,584 students in my district an average $660 scholarship last year.
I’m also disappointed in the new budget’s one million dollar one-time cut in funding for the renovation of the Pasadena Playhouse, the official state theater of California, as it celebrates its 100th Anniversary. This action sets bad precedent for future budget negotiations and breeds public distrust among tax payers.”
