Sacramento – Assemblymember Chris Holden today congratulated Speaker-elect Toni Atkins on making history as the next Speaker of the California State Assembly saying she will do great things for California.
“Today I had the privilege of nominating the new Speaker of the Assembly, Toni Atkins.
Toni is a fighter, demonstrating passion and common-sense policies. She has impressed me as someone with a true servant’s heart – willing to take on the causes she believes in, fighting for the poor, the disenfranchised and the marginalized.
I would venture to guess her humble beginning prepared her to understand the needs of the less-fortunate and to give them a voice in the halls of power; and she has done just that.”
As a San Diego City Councilmember and interim Mayor, Toni Atkins was known as a passionate supporter of the living wage ordinance and affordable housing. She led the city through turbulent times as interim Mayor, managing pension fund issues, a budget crisis and a changing government.
“Toni was chosen by her peers as interim Mayor because of her ability to bring calm, strategic thinking, and a spirit of cooperation to the job - and that is exactly the leadership she will bring to the Assembly as our next Speaker,” concluded Holden.
