Legislation to increase diversity in Community College Leadership Signed into Law (AB 1557)

For immediate release:
SACRAMENTO – Governor Brown has signed a measure authored by Assemblymember Chris Holden (D-Pasadena) that would specify that the members of the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges need to be inclusive and representative of the many demographic groups found in California and reflect the diversity of race, gender, disabled persons, and veterans.

“By requiring diversity to be taken into account when appointing board members, Assembly Bill 1557 ensures that the Board will bring the perspective, real life experiences and insight of the broadest cross-section of residents of California,” explained Assemblymember Holden.

This bill has broad support from student organizations, several community colleges, veterans’ organizations and local chambers of commerce.
