Assembly Majority Floor Leader Chris Holden Introduces Tobacco Cessation Legislation

Sacramento, CA – With renewed talks to reinvest in Medi-Cal, Assembly Majority Floor Leader Chris Holden reintroduced tobacco cessation legislation, AB 1696, to help California’s neediest residents quit smoking and avoid a lifetime of health problems. The bill requires tobacco cessation medications, counseling, and assessments to be covered for a Medi-Cal patient.

“Smoking continues to be the leading preventable cause of the death in the United States” said Assembly Majority Floor Leader Chris Holden. “We have an opportunity to save lives and money with this bill.”

Assembly Majority Floor Leader Chris Holden Kicks Off Young Legislators Program at Rose Bowl

Program aimed at cultivating the next generation of leaders

Pasadena, CA – Pasadena, CA – Assembly Majority Floor Leader Chris Holden kicked off the Young Legislators Program at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena with twelve participating high school students from the 41st Assembly District. The six-month long program will provide the students an opportunity to learn about the legislative process, services provided to constituents by elected leaders, and the relationship between local and state governments. The twelve students participating are from Pasadena, Sierra Madre, Monrovia, San Dimas, and Claremont.

“I’m thrilled to launch the first annual Young Legislators Program for the 41st Assembly District,” said Assembly Majority Floor Leader Chris Holden. “We’ve put together a program that I hope will have lasting impact on the students and maybe even inspire them to run for office one day.”

"From flooding to mudslides, the strong El Nino conditions now in effect have the potential to cause serious damage and harm to my district and the residents living here," said Assembly Majority Floor Leader Chris Holden.  "Cities and counties in Southern California are doing a phenomenal job preparing for El Nino by clearing sewage drains and providing free sand bags, but residents need to take the time to educate themselves on what they can do to stay safe and to protect their homes"

Assembly Majority Floor Leader Chris Holden Announces Availability of Assembly Fellowship Program Applications

Sacramento, CA – Assembly Majority Floor Leader Chris Holden (AD – 41) today announced the availability of applications for the 2016-2017 Jesse Marvin Unruh Assembly Fellowship Program.

The Assembly Fellowship Program provides the opportunity for aspiring public servants of all ages, background and experiences to directly participate in the legislative process. The 11–month fellowship provides an introduction to public policy formation and adoption through full-time work as professional staff in the Assembly.

Assemblymember Holden To Hold Hearing On Regional Transportation Solutions

Sacramento – Assemblymember Chris Holden will hold a hearing of the Assembly Select Committee on Regional Transportation to discuss timely transportation issues for the region and the state. The hearing Moving Goods, Moving People will includelocal and state government officials and experts who will discuss issues regarding funding solutions, active transportation and managing regional growth.

Governor Signs Holden’s First-Of-Its-Kind Legislation To Protect Small Businesses Franchisees (AB 525)

Sacramento – Assembly Majority Leader Chris Holden’s (D-Pasadena) groundbreaking legislation to protect the investment of small business franchisees by strengthening their legal rights has been signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown. Today’s action comes a little more than a year after the Governor vetoed a highly controversial predecessor to this measure, SB 610.

AB 525 protects franchise owners from unreasonable interference by corporations ensuring franchisees can operate their businesses, transfer the franchise to a qualified heir, and renew their contracts. The bill represents a historic compromise between franchise owners, corporate owners, Democratic leaders and labor.

Governor Signs Assemblymember Holden’s Bill to Provide Transparency at Water Company Meetings (AB 1077)

Sacramento – Assemblymember Chris Holden's (D-Pasadena) bill to expand access to mutual water companies' board meetings through the utilization of modern teleconference and internet streaming was signed by Governor Jerry Brown today.

AB 1077 strengthens the Mutual Water Company Open Meeting Act by requiring all shareholders to be guaranteed, at a minimum, the right to teleconference into any meeting and prohibiting the water company's board from meeting exclusively in executive session.

Governor Signs Holden’s Bill to Eliminate the Achievement Gap By Starting Teens on College and Career Pathways (AB 288)

Sacramento – After years of legislative effort, Assembly Majority Leader Chris Holden’s landmark legislation to increase college opportunity for thousands of California high school students will go into effect January 1.

Governor Brown today signed Holden’s AB 288 College and Career Access Pathways Act to allow high school students, especially those in underserved communities, greater access to college courses and career tech classes at both high school and college campuses.
